]]> Warm sun, cool breezes, and a camera in hand — the perfect setup for a week of exploration across the stunning Sicilian landscape. Our small group of photographers dove headfirst into the gritty energy of Catania (including its wonderfully chaotic fish market) and wandered through the elegant, timeworn Baroque beauty of Ragusa, Noto, and Scicli.

With each stop, we looked for stories — in light, in texture, in the rhythm of daily life — working to translate this ancient island into images that speak. A highlight: our visit to the Curto winery in Ispica, where winemaker Francesca Curto shared the rich legacy of her family’s craft. And of course, we ate very well — Pasta alla Norma, caponata, swordfish, tuna — the flavors of Sicily, captured one bite at a time.

Viva Sicilia!

Our base of Cortona offered countless photographic opportunities, but we spent time in nearby places like Arezzo, Montepulciano, Anghiari, Sansepolcro and the Chianti hills.

]]> Epic. Stunning. Otherworldly. Majestic.

These were all words that my inaugural Dolomites workshop students used to describe the mountains, meadows, lakes and peaks of the locations we visited and photographed this spring. We had some beautifully dramatic weather, but it only seemed to rain when we weren’t out photographing and the storms left behind some wonderfully photogenic clouds. From our base in Corvara in Badia, we took gondolas and funiculars to high mountain areas, and then spent a night in a rustic high-mountain Rifugio (refuge) to be able to get early light the next morning. We finished our week in Verona, where we learned about the origins of that ancient town and, finally, took in the opera Aida in Verona’s 1st Century Roman amphitheater.

Epic, indeed.

Some warm sun, cool evenings and a few showers that always seemed to happen when we were inside rather than out made for a fantastic time to develop new friendships, make great photographs and learn about the process of telling a story with our images. From our home base of Pienza, we fanned out across the area to places like San Quirico d’Orcia, Bagno Vignoni, Castiglione d’Orcia, Siena, Montepulciano, Montalcino and more. Over the week, I as new and existing skills combined to make some really fine photographs that tell a story about this unparalleled section of Tuscany.
