Umbria is nearly at the very center of the Italian peninsula and is often referred to as its Green Heart. The landscape is one of rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves and stands of cypress. Fortified hill towns that once stood guard for noblemen and peasants alike are still alive with residents but because Umbria is less frequently visited by tourists than many other regions of Italy, its towns and hillsides are typically quiet and tranquil.

We’ll concentrate on making your photographs into a deeply personal story about this wonderful region. I’ll help you examine how the camera’s eye is different from human vision and work toward training your eyes to see the way the camera sees and become a better, more insightful photographer.

We’ll start off by meeting up with our professional driver in Rome and then heading off to the beautiful town of Spoleto, in southern Umbria and Palazzo Leti our home base for the week, where you’ll have your own private room. On our first full day, we’ll photograph together and learn about Spoleto’s important history, and then in subsequent days, our driver will transport us to the Umbrian hill towns of Narni, Spello, Bevagna and Vallo di Nera, dividing our photographic time between rural and urban locations and everything in between.

One afternoon will bring us to the high, high hill town of Montefalco, and we’ll stop just outside of town to tour a winery and taste some of Umbria’s best wines.

One whole day will be spent in the astonishing Piano Grande (great plain) of Castelluccio, a massive valley filled with wildflowers and a beautiful hilltop town. Another day will be spent in Assisi, the pink-stoned hill town of St. Francis.

Our last day in Spoleto will be spent both exploring the town and putting together final projects of the work we’ve done during the week. We’ll work on sequencing as well as on content, so your final slideshow conveys your own insights of your week in Umbria.

Mixed in with our explorations will be time spent on photographic instruction – both in the field and back at our hotel, where we’ll critique images, learn nuances of technique and vision and discuss our photographic intentions and how they inform your personal sense of the places we’ll explore together. Through ample time for image making, a blend of formal and field instruction and time for discussion and critique, we will work to uncover themes and lines of vision that may not have been previously evident to you. I limit my groups to a maximum of 7 photographers to ensure a high level of personal instructional attention.

Non-photographer companions are welcome and warmly invited to attend.
