A photographic exposure is made in a moment, but it is the moments in between exposures that make the photograph come to life. Join me in the timeless Italian region of Tuscany for a personal journey into this land of the eternal moment.

Northwestern Tuscany is an area that is not frequently visited by tourists. Contrasting green, fertile valleys with high, tree-covered mountains, its varied landscape and towns form an amazing location for photography. This workshop will allow you to experience Tuscany’s remarkable culture, people, landscape and hill towns and work toward a personal photographic response to the Tuscan sense of place. I will push you to go beyond the picturesque and help you discover your own response to the texture, rhythm and spirit of Tuscany.

In the early afternoon of Saturday, June 17, our professional driver will pick us up at the Florence train station and drive us west to the beautiful walled town of Lucca. We’ll settle into our home for the week, the small and elegant Palazzo Busdraghi, where you’ll have your own private room.

We’ll spend the next day exploring Lucca with our cameras. Our home for the week is an almost perfectly preserved jewel of medieval architecture, nestled in a green river valley. Its walled ramparts are so intact that you can ride a bicycle around the whole town on them.

During next few days, our driver will bring us to some of the most beautiful sites in the northwestern corner of Tuscany. One day will be spent exploring the spectacular mountain town of Barga and the surrounding Garfagnana area, thick with high-mountain forests and spectacular vistas.

A subsequent day will find us photographing in the quarry town of Cararra, where the marble for Michelangelo’s David was hewn. We’ll have a tour of the blinding-white quarries, where stone has been cut from the mountains for centuries.

We’ll take a break from the mountains and cross over to the region of Liguria for a day in the famed Cinque Terre – the Five Lands – where candy-colored seaside fishing villages tumble down to the azure water below.

Another day will find us touring, tasting and photographing wine production and then moving on to tour and photograph a Vespa museum.

Our last day in Lucca will be spent both exploring the town and putting together final projects of the work we’ve done during the week. We’ll work on sequencing as well as on content, so your final slideshow conveys your own personal sense of the eternal moments you’ve experienced in this stunning area of Italy.

The morning of June 24, we’ll transport you back to Florence, where you’ll be able to return home or travel on to other destinations.

Mixed in with our explorations will be time spent on photographic instruction – both in the field and back at our hotel, where we’ll critique images, learn nuances of technique and vision and discuss our photographic intentions and how they inform your personal sense of the places we’ll explore together. Through ample time for image making, a blend of formal and field instruction and time for discussion and critique, we will work to uncover themes and lines of vision that may not have been previously evident to you. I limit my groups to a maximum of 7 photographers to ensure a high level of personal instructional attention.

Non-photographer companions are welcome and warmly invited to attend.
